The Truth About AI in App Development: Hype vs. Reality

How AI Is Revolutionising Software Development (And Why You Still Need Experts)

In this article, we break down how AI is changing the way we build software — what’s working, what’s not, and what it means for founders building apps today.

There’s a lot of hype around AI tools in software development right now — and some of it’s deserved. Tools like Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and others are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in terms of speed and automation. But if you’re a founder or non-technical stakeholder dreaming of building an app with the click of a button… we’re not quite there.

At least, not yet.

The promise is real — but so are the limitations

We’ve been experimenting with AI coding tools for over a year now, and the truth is: they’re powerful. In the hands of a skilled developer, tools like Cursor can massively accelerate the pace of delivery. We’re talking 5X–10X output increases on some projects.

But here’s the thing most people don’t mention: these tools still require someone experienced at the wheel.

Non-technical founders can’t just prompt their way to a production-ready app (at least, not today). The output is often impressive — but it can also be vague, brittle, or just flat-out wrong. You need someone who knows how to structure codebases, catch hidden bugs, and architect a system that’ll actually scale.

AI is more like a jet engine strapped to your best engineer — not a replacement for one.

The Influencer Problem: Selling the Dream Before It’s Real

Scroll through LinkedIn or YouTube and you’ll see no shortage of influencers spruiking AI development tools as if they’re magic wands — “Replace your dev team with AI!” or “Build your entire SaaS app with one prompt!” It makes for great content. It also wildly oversells what’s possible today.

Are the tools improving rapidly? Absolutely. Are they helping experienced developers move faster and smarter? Without a doubt. But can a non-technical founder realistically replace a dev team with a ChatGPT wrapper and a GitHub repo generator? Not even close.

The reality is, these tools are assistive, not autonomous. They’re incredible accelerators in the hands of experts — but they still need steering, supervision, and (often) serious correction. Code quality, architecture decisions, security, scalability — all still require deep expertise.

So why the hype?

Part of it is clickbait. Part of it is optimism. But let’s be honest — some of it is a sales tactic. By promising shortcuts that don’t yet exist, it creates buzz, gets attention, and sells courses, tools, or startup equity.

At Spritely, we’d rather keep it real. AI is changing how we work — dramatically — but it hasn’t changed what good software still needs: smart people making smart decisions. The tools are here to enhance great developers, not replace them.

How it’s changed the way we work at Spritely

For agencies like ours, the shift has been huge. Our senior onshore developers have essentially evolved into senior architects. They’re not just writing code — they’re guiding AI systems, shaping the direction, and correcting course when things go off track.

As our Senior Architect Jordan puts it:

“Before using tools such as Cursor, my output was on average around 10,000 lines of code every couple of months. Now, with the AI tools, I’m outputting that in one week.”

That kind of velocity has completely changed how we plan and deliver projects.

Where we might’ve used a mix of one senior developer plus a few offshore resources to get a basic project live, we’re now seeing our core Australian-based team execute complex builds at a much higher standard — in less time.

The result? Our clients are getting more bang for their buck. More velocity. Better quality. Fewer layers. And no offshore handoffs to worry about.

What this means for founders

If you’re building an app today, AI absolutely belongs in the conversation. But it’s not a shortcut around experience — it’s a multiplier of it.

What used to take months can now take weeks. But the need for clear planning, smart product thinking, and experienced oversight hasn’t gone anywhere. In fact, it’s more important than ever.

At Spritely, we’re staying at the forefront of AI-enabled development. Not because it’s trendy — but because it’s helping us deliver better outcomes for our clients. Faster builds. Leaner teams. Higher quality.

It’s a pretty exciting time to be doing what we do.
